Camping packing is under way over here!
I'm pretty sure I have everything BUT the kitchen sink packed.
No joke.
No joke.
I thought I would share my tips for packing for a family going on a camping trip.
Keep in mind my family is all still little...so they're not in charge of packing anything.

To give you an idea of what I'm packing for.
We'll be staying in an air-conditioned pop-up camper for seven days.
We'll be staying in an air-conditioned pop-up camper for seven days.
There isn't a laundromat anywhere near us so we pack knowing we won't be doing laundry.
I've accumulated enough swimsuits for the kids that they have a clean swimsuit every day we're there.
I pack a clean set of play clothes and jammies for each day.
That's about it for them.
That's about it for them.
I bring enough bath towels for us to switch out with a fresh one mid week.
Same goes for beach towels.
I also bring a switch of pillowcases for mid-week in addition to a few fresh blankets should we need them.
Now here's what I've learned through trial and error.
Suitcases and bags don't work well for us in a pop-up camper.
There's not enough room to lay out everyone's suitcases.
And mid-week the clothes are scattered and it becomes overwhelming.
So here's what I do now.

So here's what I do now.
I bought several large rectangular rubbermaid boxes with lids.
One of them is for the kids, one for the towels and one for my kitchen supplies.
I'll walk you through what I do with them.
For the kids I separate their clothes into piles.
Shirts
Shorts
Swimsuits
Undies
Pajama Tops
Pajama Bottoms
Then I label a gallon size ziploc baggie for each child with these categories.
Roll their clothes up like a burrito and stuff them into the assigned baggie.

Then toss your baggie of clothes into the rubbermaid box!
When it comes time to pull out what I need there's no more digging through clothes.
I just find my assigned baggie and pull out what I need.

We keep the rubbermaid bin on top of the counter in the camper.
We're also able to stack another bin on top if we need the space.
I also pre-pack a "going home" outfit.
That way on the last day I'm not scrambling to find

something clean for the kids to wear on the car ride home.
And that's it for clothes.
I use my other rubber maid bin to store my towels in.
We usually keep this in the back of my car to give us more space in the camper.
And I use the last bin to store any kitchen stuff I brought along.
Bowls, spatulas, kitchen towels, dish soap, etc.
It keeps everything contained which keeps eliminates any chaos!
Are any of your families campers?
We've gone every year since Emma was a baby.
We've gone every year since Emma was a baby.
That first year we were in a tent.
That would be the first and LAST year we ever do that ;)
I'd love to hear any packing tips you might have!
we are big campers but now with a 7 month old are SO nervous about going. we dont have a camper so I am not sure we are going to risk it for a while.
ReplyDeletei love the rubbermaid idea! my mom always made a pillow case into a dirty clothes bag with a draw string for camping. that way all of our clothes wouldnt get mixed up.
have fun!
Don't be afraid to camp with little ones. It can be wonderful ... even in a tent. We tent camped for 20+ years (with our 10+ children) before buying a tent trailer a few years ago.
DeleteI love this! I was actually thinking about doing a similar post since we are leaving Saturday for our annual beach camping trip. I pack us each a laundry basket of clothes. It is easy to see and I can stack them. We leave them in the trunk and if we need to sit them on the ground, they don't get dirty!
ReplyDeleteSmart way to pack! I would have never thought of it and just taken suit cases!!
ReplyDeleteWe haven't camped yet as a family but want to. I went camping every weekend in the summer with my family when I was growing up.
I can't wait to hear all about it when you get back.
ReplyDeletegreat ideas! i would have to bring a fresh towels for every day, i am weird about that, cant use the same one twice. have a great time with your family.
ReplyDeleteSo, I totally had to crack up about this comment . . . only because we have an extra large family.
DeletePicture this . . .
10 people camping for 10 days = 100 bath towels plus 100 beach towels
Can you imagine???
We have a hard enough time keeping track of 100 pair of underwear and 100 pair of socks.
:) :) :)
I lost all of my blog links for awhile, so I've been missing you.
ReplyDeleteWe LOVE to camp, with ALL of our kids. :) We, too, have a pop-up tent trailer. And, we started packing in rubbermaid tubs several years ago. Love it!
When our kids were little, we would use a gallon ziploc bag for each day of the week. So, the underwear, socks, shorts, and t-shirt would all be together in one place.
Hope your camping trip is FUN! We are still waiting for the sun to shine up here in Western WA. Hoping to camp sometime soon.
:) :) :)
I am actually packing up for a camping trip today. I love the large ziploc bag and rubbermaid totes ideas. I get more obsessed over what to pack for food when we go. We used to only go tent camping, but this will be our second camping trip in a trailer. We go through a trailer company that drops the trailer off at our campsite when we get there and takes it away the day we leave. It's so easy and so luxurious to have a stove, refrigerator, bathroom, and heater compared to tent camping.
ReplyDeleteJust wanted to stop by and say that I absolutely love reading your blog. It's one of my favorites because it is so refreshing!
ReplyDeleteHope camping is a wonderfully fun success.
You are so organized. Love all of your tips and tricks! Thanks for sharing. :)
