Poppyseed Chicken and Netflix

posted on: Monday, January 31, 2011

Hello!  This is going to be a fairly quick post.  Trav is bathing both of the kiddos while I have a few minutes of alone time :)  It's part of our nightly routine.  Eat dinner...they go to the bathroom to bathe and I sit down on the couch and kick up my feet for about thirty minutes.  Love this time of day!

Before I moved to Texas I had never heard of the recipe called Poppyseed Chicken.  Turns out it's a favorite around where we live.  It's a popular dish to bring to people who have just had a baby or to someone who has been sick.  AND there is a reason for that... it is absolutely DELICIOUS and easy to make!

I made it for dinner last week and served it over mashed potatoes.  You can also serve it over noodles or even eat it alone!

POPPYSEED CHICKEN

  • 6 skinless, boneless chicken breast halves - diced
  • 1 (10.75 ounce) can condensed cream of chicken soup
  • 1 (8 ounce) container sour cream
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 8 ounces buttery round crackers, crushed
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons poppy seeds
  • 1/2 cup butter, melted

Directions

  1. Preheat to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).

    1. Place the diced chicken breasts on the bottom of a 9x13 inch baking dish sprayed with a nonstick cooking spray. In a bowl combine the soup and sour cream.  Pour or spoon mixture over the chicken. Sprinkle salt and pepper on top.

      1. Mix the poppy seeds and crushed crackers and sprinkle mixture over the chicken, salt and pepper. Drizzle the melted butter or margarine over the cracker/poppyseed layer and bake covered in the preheated oven for 30 to 45 minutes (take cover off for the last 5 minutes). Let stand a few minutes before servings.

Last night we signed up for Netflix.  We opted to just get the movies straight to our computer rather than have dvds delivered to our house.  Talk about fabulous!!!  There are TONS of great movies and tv series that we've been wanting to watch.  And it's only $8 a month :)  Sure beats wasting money on renting movies!  Some of the shows I'm excited to watch are Cake Boss and Say yes to the dress :)
Does anyone else use Netflix?  My parents have it and use their Wii to watch it through their tv.  So crazy to me!

Alrighty... both babes are out of the tub and dressed.  Time to read some books and pop them into bed!
Hope everyone had a great Monday :)

This, that and Camera Strap Covers

Good Sunday afternoon!

It's Sunday afternoon naptime over here... and quiet time for this mommy!
We had a full and long week that I am thankful is now over!  It was a great week but I definitely packed in a little more than I normally care to and probably should have.  I had quite a few make up piano lessons and then also watched two little girls that I normally don't watch.  And on top of that Colt and I have been fighting nasty colds which makes for even longer days.  My voice has been coming and going for about three days now... hopefully one more night of good rest will be all it takes for it to stick around!  It's hard to parent when you hardly have a voice. :) I'll tell Emma to do something and she'll respond, "HUH???"..then I'll repeat...and she'll respond again with "HUH?"  It's frustrating for everybody haha!

The weather here in Texas has been absolutely beautiful this week.... in the 60s and 70s!
We spent almost every afternoon playing outside for a couple of hours.  There is nothing better than fresh air to make your kiddos sleep great at night!

The past few weeks I've been finding Colt more and more sitting in baskets around the house.
Anything that is flat or shaped like a basket is a "boat" in his mind :)

Since we were homebound most of the week with colds and extra kiddos I had a little extra time to work on some sewing projects I've been wanting to try.  One of the projects being a camera strap cover.
After making one for myself and loving how it turned out I decided to make a few extras!
I'll be listing them in my Etsy shop in the next couple of days.  But I thought I'd give you readers a first shot at them.  What you see is all there is... so first come first serve.
They're $15 a piece and if you're not local then add $5 for shipping.
If you want one then just leave a comment on which one you want!

They are 24 inches long and 2 1/2 inches wide.  You simply slip it over your DSLR camera strap.

Birthday girl and a Princess Party

posted on: Wednesday, January 26, 2011

Goodmorning!!!  I just got Trav out the door to work and have a few extra minutes of peace and quiet while the kiddos are sleeping!

___________________________________________________________

This past weekend was sweet Emma Kate's 3rd birthday.  I can't believe my little girl is THREE!
She's been talking about having a princess party for about half a year.  So that is exactly what we had!
We invited family and a few of her best friends for an evening of birthday fun!  Her actual birthday was on Sunday but we had her party on Saturday night.

She asked that she have a dress just like her favorite princess, Sleeping Beauty!

When her girlfriends got there they all made crowns and candy necklaces.

Emma's Aunt Kate bought her a fun princess tent for her gift.  The girls had the best time playing in it!

And while they were busy playing the Prince of the party was quietly sneaking
sips of lemonade out of their tea cups :)

Emma and her best friends :)
Camdyn, Ella and Macey

On her birthday morning she opened up a few more presents
and then we headed to IHOP for a birthday breakfast of pancakes!

After IHOP we went to Bass Pro to buy the kids each a little fishing pole. :)
The true fisherman that he is, Trav has been wanting to teach the kids how to cast and reel in a fish.
He took them out in the yard when we got home to practice with them....
I don't think it went as well as he had planned in his head :) ha!

After a good afternoon nap we played with some of her new birthday toys.
One of our favorites is this little fishing game... thankyou Ella!!!
I'm pretty sure Colt might be the best at it!

We ended off her birthday with a movie and leftover pizza :)

Oh and before I forget....
Check out this fun giveaway.  They have the most DARLING embroidered shirts and dresses!!!

I'll be back in a day or two with some new recipes and a few new ideas.
Happy Wednesday :)

Curtains and Broccoli

posted on: Tuesday, January 18, 2011

Well....the curtains have been made for the living room.
I actually spent most of my free time today working on them.
It took me only about 30 minutes to finish sewing them.
Once they were hung I thought they smelled kind of weird.  Sort of like motor oil or grease.
Which I guess is to be expected since they are drop clothes that I did purchase from Lowes.
So I took the finished curtains back down and popped them into the wash on cold.
Once they were washed I thought I would just hang them back up and they could dry on the curtain rod.
I put two panels on the curtain rod and hung it up.
I stepped back to admire my work and was SHOCKED to see that the darn curtains had shrunk a whole foot from being washed!!! I never would have thought washing them in cold would have done that...would you?!?
Luckily I had some extra fabric leftover and was able to sew a foot of ruffle along the bottom of the curtain.  They're not quite what I was going for... but oh well.  :)
So if you plan on making curtains out of drop clothes any time soon make sure you do NOT wash them. Or I suppose you could pre-wash your fabric before you make curtains.
That probably would have been the smart thing to do!

The other night for dinner I made fettucine with chicken and vegetables.
One of the veggies was broccoli.

This little guy LOVES broccoli.  He holds it by the stem and savors it slowly.

This little gal does NOT like broccoli.
She told me she wants to "wash the dishes with the broccoli."

I suppose it does look like little green scrub brushes :)

Off to get my clean sheets out of the dryer!  I LOVE LOVE LOVE clean sheets! :)
Bedtime is going to feel extra nice tonight!
Have a great Wednesday tomorrow!

Three day weekend...

posted on: Monday, January 17, 2011

Can I get a hooray for a three day weekend?!?
The rest of the family is tucked into bed (including Travis!) and has been since around 7:45.
I love having a little bit of alone time at night to piddle around the house.  At the moment I'm taking a short computer break from making curtains for the living room (more on that in a minute).

Our weekend was spent pretty much around the house.
Yesterday after church and lunch we all came home and took two and a half hour naps.
The weather was gray and rainy which in my book is perfect napping weather!

This morning I had a doctor's appointment to check on baby Cade.  All is looking great!
I can't believe I'll be 30 weeks on Thursday!  It's beginning to feel like the end is in sight :)

I think I've mentioned it before but we don't have a tv.  We actually haven't had one since March...which means we're coming up on a whole year without a tv in the house!
We still love to rent movies to watch on our laptops.  And the kids enjoy different little shows that can be found on the internet.  In the picture below they're watching a horse video... which explains both of the kids' faces :)

With Travis home an extra day this weekend I had a few extra minutes to do some sewing.
I spent part of the afternoon organizing all of my fabrics and decided to make Emma a Valentine's shirt out of some of them.

One of my goals for this weekend was to get curtains sewn for the kids' room.  A month or so ago I had begun sewing with some fabric that I had found from Ikea.  I finished one panel and there it hung for a month.  The more it hung there the more I wasn't pleased with how it was looking.  They were just too thin and didn't provide enough privacy and blocking of the light that I was wanting.
So on to plan B.  I had Travis move my drop cloth curtains out of the living room into their bedroom.  I loved how it looked so I left them!  Which now leaves my living room without curtains.  I headed to Lowe's tonight to pick up two more drop clothes and am currently working on another set of curtains :)
While I was working in the kids' room this afternoon I had Travis (he's such a good sport!) switch around the kid's beds.  Poor Colt is SUCH a light sleeper and his bed was right by the door.  So I'm hoping that moving his crib to the other side of the room will help him sleep a little better.
I also had Trav (again :) ) hang up a gigantic picture frame above the big bed in their room.
I've been wanting a place to hang Emma's artwork and I think this will be just the ticket!
I'll post more pictures of their room in the next week or two.  My goal for the next two weeks is to get pillows sewn for the beds and a few more things hung on the wall.

While we were working in the kids' bedroom I had a tasty Chicken Pot Pie baking in the oven.
If you've not tried this recipe then do it!
It's one of our favorites!

What I was afraid was going to happen has happened.
Now that I've finished this post I'm feeling too sleepy to finish the curtains....ahhh... oh well.  Good thing they'll keep until tomorrow!
Have a great Tuesday tomorrow friends!
Nighty night from the blue cottage!

Fabric Loving

posted on: Friday, January 14, 2011

Hello!  This past week I've been browsing on Etsy for some new fabric.  I'm needing boy fabric to make Cade a new carseat cover, burprags and a blanket.  And I also wanted to start getting ideas for spring/summer fabrics for Emma.  I could seriously browse fabrics ALL day!  Here are just a few that caught my eye.  I am always drawn to large floral prints as you can see below.  But I also love the quirky prints...such as the prom print and dog print :) too cute!

And here are a few that I thought would be cute for little boys...
