Waiting...Fixed and Girls afternoon

It's 10:45pm here and I'm waiting for the call from my brother that my sweet nephew Jake has been born!!!  It should be any minute now!  I'm sad that we live so far away and I will miss smooching on his freshly born little face.  They'd better watch out though...the kids and I are going up in a week or so and I am going to love that baby to pieces! :)

In other exciting news my surger is now FIXED!  I had ran over a pin with it awhile back working on an order and it has been out of commision for about two months.  So, keep your eyes out for some new fall and winter items in the Blue Cottage Kids shop!

The store that I found to fix the surger was located on the square of a town near us.
I had thought before hand to ask my sister to watch Colt for me so that Emma and I could spend a little time together.  And I am SO glad I did :)

Their town square had quite a few cute stores and quaint sandwich shops.
Our first stop after dropping the surger off was to the quilting store.
We ooo'd and ahhh'd over fabrics together :) She favored all the pink and flowered fabrics.  Not surprising.

Then we headed across the street to The Corner Pocket for a dish of frozen custard :)

We had such a great afternoon spending time together!

Alrighty... last post of August... I'll be back in September with pictures of my new nephew (since I know you're all dying to see him) and some other fun happenings to chat about :)

Good night and have a great first day of September tomorrow!!!

Weekend of pictures and an apple

Greetings readers!

Ahhh...sad the weekend is over but so feeling refreshed and ready for a new week!

Here's a little recap of our weekend...

Friday night football!!!! Sadly our boys were beaten during the last bit by a touchdown.  Those kind of losses are always so disappointing.  Can't wait for them to win this week!!! :)

Saturday morning Trav didn't have to be in until 9 so we had a pancake breakfast as a family before he headed out.
The weather was cooler than usual so the kids and I headed to the park... I can't remember the last time we've been there?! It's been so darn hot lately!

This morning was Sunday school and church.  Our Sunday school class has switched head teachers and we are LOVING our new one!  He used to be a professor at a seminary in Dallas so he is FULL of awesome information.  We're currently studying a book from the Bible each Sunday.  Talk about information overload going this fast!     But the point of it is for us to go home that week and read through it ourselves to dig even deeper.

After church we came home and all four of us took 2 1/2 hour naps.  Doesn't it feel so good to get rested up for your week!?

After naps we headed out to one of our favorite Mexican restaurants for fajitas and Dr. Peppers!  I tried all evening to get a picture of the kids together...
this was all I got... Colt had already ran off and I think Emma is picking her wedgie :)

On our way home we drove through my favorite neighborhood that is near the restaurant.  The street and homes look like they're right out of the movie, "Father of the Bride."  Everything home is immaculate and well cared for... so dreamy :)

We ended the day with an evening walk.
I am so thankful for days like these that we get to spend together as a family!

I'm excited for this week and what it holds :)
My piano students begin this week, another football game and a few other things I'll share about later on in the week.

Hope everybody had a great weekend!

Happy Monday :)

Almost forgot... Trav's new work computer is an Apple so I've been using it lately.  I know that everybody who has an Apple prefers them.  But at what point do you prefer them?  So far I am NOT impressed and still prefer my Dell.  Thoughts?!

I am thankful... thankful that my kids were just sick with something as trivial as a stomache bug.
Thankful for a cozy home... thankful for a loving husband... just all around thankful.

I am LOVING the Leaves scent from Bath and Body works.
I have it plugged into my wall-flowers in the living room and dining room.
It is the perfect blend of fall scents, "autumnal notes of golden nectar, juicy mandarin and red delicious apple are paired with toasted cinnamon stick, mulled cider spices and freshly harvested red berries."

I am finishing writing down our menu for the week.  Since Travis gets home so late from football he always re-heats whatever we had for dinner.  So, planning my fall menus I try to keep that in mind.  Some dishes are better re-heated than others.  All of the following are leftover worthy (and that's saying alot for me... I HATE leftovers. blah).

Round Steak Sauerbraten served over noodles
Spaghetti and Meatballs with Homeade Sauce (going to try the Pioneer Woman's Recipe!)
Meatloaf served with Cheesy Mashed Potatoes and Broccoli
Taco Lasagna (you will LOVE this recipe!)

That's about a week and a half worth of dinners for us.  Each dish we'll probably get two meals out of.

At the bottom of this post I'll give you the recipes for the Round Steak Sauerbraten and Taco Lasagna. Both are fabulous!

The only picture I've taken since last Friday is of a pot roast I made on Sunday.  Sorry Grandparents... I know that's lame.  I won't even show you the picture of the pot roast...it doesn't look very appetizing :)
I will get back into the picture taking groove tomorrow.  Promise!

Alright...here are the recipes...

*I was first introduced to this delicious dish back in junior high... my best friend Lindsey's mom made it.  It's turned into a family favorite at our house!*

Taco Lasagna

Step One:
1 lb. hamburger meat, browned
1 medium onion, chopped
6 oz. tomato paste
8 oz. tomato sauce
1/2 C. chopped green pepper
1/2 tsp. chili powder
1 package taco seasoning
1/4 C. water

Combine the above ingredients and simmer until the veggies are tender.

Step Two:
1 1/2 C. Sour Cream (16 oz)
2 eggs
1/2 tsp pepper

Combine and set aside.

Step Three:

4-5 Flour Tortillas (I usually use more)
2-3 C. Jack Cheese
2 C. crushed tortilla chips

In a 9x 13" pan, layer and repeat.

*1/2 of meat mixture
*1/2 of cream sauce
*1/2 of the cheese

Top with crushed chips.
Bake 30 minutes @ 325 degrees.

*My Mom made this recipe growing up.  One of her best friends had given it to her.  You can serve it over egg noodles or mashed potatoes*

Round Steak Sauerbraten

1 1/2 lb. round steak
2 Tbsp. oil
1/2 C. chopped onion
2 Tbsp. vinegar
2 Tbsp. brown sugar
1 Tbsp. worchestershire
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. pepper
1/2 tsp. ginger
1 bay leaf
2 C. water
1 envelope brown gravy mix.

Cut meat into 1" squares.  Brown in hot oil.  In a shaker jar, mix 1 C. water and gravy mix and shake until smooth.  Add remaining ingredients and shake to mix.  Put both liquid and meat into crockpot.  Cook on low 4-6 hours.

Have a great Thursday tomorrow!  We have our first football game tomorrow night... can't wait for our boys to WIN!!! :)  Go Jackets!!!

Homer, Jethro and Colt

Goodevening!  Actually, over here tonight I suppose I should just say "evening". There's not a whole lot of good going on around here tonight.  I'm sitting watch in the chair over Emma and Travis who are laying on the couches.  They both have some sort of stomache bug and have been throwing up since 8.  Poor things.  Colt already had it this weekend...except I thought he threw up because he was a social piggy at a barbeque we went too.  He was passed from person to person and each time I would see him he would have a new treat in his hand.  Turns out it was the sickness bug. :(  Praying that Bekka and I don't get it and that these two would feel better by morning!

So, I have a dilemna.  And if you have any advice whatsoever I would LOVE to hear it!

Here's the deal...

Sweet Colt has maybe worn shoes 2 times in his one year old life.  Which is fine, because he used to be just a crawler.  But now that he's walking it's a whole different story.

At church on Sunday he's been moved up to the toddler nursery because of his mad walking skills.
Yay for that!

This is my problem... boyfriend has some FAT and thick feet.  I can not find a single shoe that will fit his feet!  Every shoe I've tried on him is too tight.  And if I go up a couple sizes to fit the fatness then they slip off because of the length.  He's in a size 6 1/2 for length and I would say an 8 for fatness.

When I think I might have found a shoe that fits this is how I know it does NOT...

It's pitiful.  He won't walk in anything I've tried on him.  He will just crawl around behind me boo-hooing until I take his shoes off.  Then he stands up and goes on his merry way.  :)

I'm in a bind because he NEEDS to be wearing shoes when we go places...football games, church, etc.

He's already the only kid in the toddler class at church who doesn't wear shoes... this might possibly be him in 20 years if I don't find a shoe that fits... I wonder if the members of Barefoot Ballads need another band member...

I did buy Colt a pair of these soft leather slippers to wear to the football game.  They're comfortable and protect his feet but the only problem is they don't hold up very well to a rough walking one year old.  By the end of the evening the dogs were black and dirty as were the bottoms.  And at 12.99 per pair I don't see myself replacing them every time they get dirty. This kid  needs a pair of real shoes!

So... anybody who have kids with fat feet...what brand of shoes do you buy?!?

Off to find myself a late night snack... have a great Tuesday everyone :)

Friday evening

Good evening faithful readers! :)

We just got home about an hour ago (it's 11:30pm) from our football scrimmage this evening.  Next week is our first game! Super excited for this season... our boys are looking really good this year!

The babes have been bathed and tucked into bed. And now I'm taking a moment to unwind and then heading that way myself!  We had a GREAT but long day today!

Our morning was spenting shopping for shoes for Colty...that is a whole other story for another blog post.  I'll tell you the story in the next post... basically his feet are fat and I can't find shoes that fit.  :)  More on that later though.

Then we came home for quick naps before some friends came over to play for the afternoon while their mom was away.  And after that it was off to the scrimmage...and all of that combined makes for a very busy back to back day.  I am SO happy to be sitting here ALL alone...in peace and quiet :) Thankyou Lord for creating the end of the day! :)

Here are a few pics of our evening...

Every time the crowd would clap and cheer Colt would join right in like he knew what was going on!

Our Coach :) I am so proud of him!

After every game the wives and kids head down to the field to see our husbands/dad's.  I love this part!!!

Take note of Colt's shoes above... I'll tell you about them tomorrow...

On the agenda for tomorrow is grocery shopping.  I've been doing the Pantry Challenge and have been trying to use up whatever I have in the pantry and freezer.  I've pretty much cleaned both out and it is TIME for food in this house!  On the menu for next week is Beef Stew (crockpot), Meatloaf with mashed potatoes, Roast with potatoes and carrots, French Dip and Home-Made Granola for breakfast.  I am in the mood for some good home cooking!  Mom...would you mind just coming down and preparing all of the above for me? It always tastes better when you make it :) :) :)

I'll be sharing a few of the recipes next week!

Have a great weekend!

Monday Musings...

This Monday has been random...but good :)

Our day consisted of household chores and the library.  Nothing to special...but a good day!

Just a few random thoughts from my day (and when I say random....I mean rannnnndom)...

This morning I was jotting down on a piece of paper my list of to-do's for the week.
At one point I wasn't near my paper so I jotted the initial of what I needed to remember on my hand.

A G with a circle around it... it was a very important reminder...

So important that I can't remember what the G and the circle stood for.
I wrote it on my hand at 10 this morning... knew it was very important that I do this... and I STILL can't remember what that important thing was.  *sigh*

This morning on our way to the library I swung through Sonic for a mid-morning snack of tater-tots.
After sharing the small thing of tater-tots with the kids I had a moment of sadness that they were all gone.
I went to throw the container in the bag and discovered there were not one, not two, but THREE tatertots in the bottom of the bag!!! It might as well have been a million dollars in the bottom of my bag :)
And yes, I savored each one and didn't share the last three with the kids.
Oink Oink.

Please tell me what you would have done in this situation...

After the kids were in bed I made myself a huge salad for supper.  Big plate of lettuce with tomatoes and cucumbers on it.  I then proceded to get the Catalina dressing out of the fridge.  I glanced at the back of the bottle to see what the expiration date was (habit...I do this with everything).  It said December 10, 2009.  I stood there for a few minutes debating if I should use another dressing.  I tasted it....tasted delicious.  I stood there and thought about it a few minutes longer.  And then I dressed my salad with the expired dressing.

And you know what...it was a risk worth taking... it was such a tasty salad :)

Although...I'll get back with you tomorrow on this desicion..hopefully I make it through the night ;)

Well....like I said... a very random post for a very random Monday.
So I shall leave you with very random pictures of my children :)
*Trav's sister Kate went and visited Japan a few weeks back and brought the kids these headbands*
I can't remember what they say...it could be something terrible for all I know.. but they sure look sweet :)

Have a great Tuesday everyone!!!

Popsicles and Football

Happy Friday!!!  So excited the weekend is almost here! Actually, so excited that Sunday is almost here.  Trav has all Sundays off this football season.  A little different than the previous years...I'm so thankful for the new change!

Last night a few of the coach's wives and kids went up to the practice field to pass popsicles out to the players.  We had a random thunderstorm roll through so the boys were practicing in the indoor facility.

Emma chickened out at the last minute...
I guess the big boys running towards her was a little overwhelming :)

Trav and the kids.  Please excuse the giant football I put on Trav's shirt :) just wanted to cover our towns name for anoniminity sake.

After all the boys had received their popsicles the kids enjoyed their own.

By the end of the night both kids were FILTHY!
Here's proof from Emma's hand...

Off to clean up the house and visit with Trav who is finally home!
Have a great weekend :)

Here we go!!!

Football is officially underway at our house!
Two-a-days started this morning....we're so excited for this season!

I was looking through my pictures at which ones I should post tonight and I just realized that my kids are finally playing together! :)  I'm not sure when this happened and how I've missed it.

Emma has always loved to push Colt around in her stroller.  A few nights ago she thought he needed a bonnet and blanket as well :)
Don't feel too sorry for him...he was having the time of his life! :)

Besides learning how to walk this past week Colt has also learned how to climb up onto ANYTHING and EVERYTHING.  His favorite spot to climb up on is Emma's bed.  They spent quite a bit of time on the bed together today.  Him in the corner playing peekaboo. And her reading books, oblivious to what he's doing :)

We spent a little time out in the kiddie pool this afternoon.  We stayed out until the popsicles were gone and the water was warm....which was really only about 20 minutes.  So ready for the Texas heat to cool down a bit!

Nighty night everyone... have a great Tuesday tomorrow!

Cinnamon Sugar Muffins

Lately I have been stumbling upon some of the best recipes!

These muffins are seriously the most DELICIOUS muffins I've ever tasted!  I found the recipe here

You MUST make these muffins this weekend!  My mom made them for her family this past week and served them with quiche for dinner.  Great idea!

Cinnamon Sugar Muffins

Softened butter for muffin tin (I just used cooking spray)
2 cups all purpose flour
1 tsp baking soda
½ tsp cinnamon
½ tsp nutmeg (I didn't have any so I just used an extra 1/2 tsp of cinnamon)
1/8 tsp salt
2 extra large eggs
¼ cup canola oil
¾ cup sugar, plus extra for muffin tin
¼ cup brown sugar
¾ cup sour cream
¼ cup buttermilk (I just used regular milk)
1 tsp vanilla extract (forgot to add these and they were still delish!)

for topping

1 cup sugar
2 Tbsp cinnamon
¼ cup melted butter

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

2. Butter muffin tin and sprinkle each cup with sugar, being sure to coat all sides.
I skipped this step...just used my cooking spray and called it a day!

3. In a bowl, sift together flour, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.

4. In a separate bowl, whisk together eggs, oil, sugars, sour cream, buttermilk and vanilla.

5. Fold the flour mixture into the wet ingredients until combined.

6. Using an ice cream scoop, fill each muffin cup.
After adding the batter to the muffin cups I sprinkled cinnamon and sugar right on top and then baked instead of following steps 9 and 10.
My mom baked the muffins, and then brushed the tops with butter while still hot and then sprinkled cinnamon and sugar on them.

So basically, do whatever you want :)

7. Bake 18 – 22 min.
8. When the muffins come out of the oven, melt butter in a saucepan.
9. In a separate bowl, mix cinnamon and sugar
10. When the muffins are cool enough to handle, brush the tops with melted butter, and then dip into the cinnamon sugar mix.

Serve these to your family this weekend and they will love you forever :)

They are THAT good :)

Have a great weekend!

Scorching heat, Rice and Detergent

Goodevening!  Well, we survived another day of SCORCHING heat here in Texas!
It is so hot outside your eyeballs literally sweat! You think I'm kidding. :)
One of the perks of it being so hot outside is that it is like a giant dryer...which is perfect since ours is broken!  I put out a load of sheets around noon and they were dry within 15 minutes.
Before I moved to Texas I never thought I would say this but, it is even to hot to go swimming.  Sad but true.
So we've been keeping ourselves occupied and entertained within the coolness of our home,
the library, Lowes and Target :)

Obviously if you've been reading the blog this past month you know we've been doing home improvements.  Some of those improvements being painting.  We've spent alot of time in the paint swatch aisle at Lowe's picking out "perfect" colors.  Now I'm sure that many a mother has done this.  But our last trip to Lowe's I picked up a variety of colored paint cards for Emma to practice her colors.
We have had the most fun making up games with the paint cards!

Emma's Great Nana recently gave her an old children's fork and knife set that Emma's Nana used to use as a little girl.  You would have thought that Great Nana had given her a trip to Disney World.
She was SO excited to use her fork and knife at supper that evening :)

She's used it at EVERY meal since.  She thinks everything needs to be cut... peas, cereal, toast, rice....

Speaking of rice.  I made chicken and rice for supper this evening.
Let it be known that I am banning rice from our home until my kids turn into teenagers.
There was rice EVERWHERE after supper! And I mean EVERYWHERE!!!!
I might as well have thrown handfuls of rice around my dining room and it would've looked just the same.
Colt thinks it's funny to throw food, so that was part of the problem.
Emma kept trying to "cut" her rice, thus sending a stream of rice flying from the back of her knife everytime she cut.
As we were leaving the table to head to the bathtub there was a trail of rice following both kids into the bathroom.
Inside the bathtub there was at least half a cup of rice floating in the bottom of the tub.
AND there was rice stuck all throughout Emma's hair.

So... like I said. Rice is banned from our home for the next 10 years.

Now, on to the good stuff...

I am so curious as to what everybody uses for laundry detergent?!
I have tried EVERY kind of laundry detergent known to man looking for the perfect detergent.
I was wanting something that would clean our clothes thoroughly but something that would also smell fresh for quite awhile.

Here's the winner...

Our clothes have NEVER smelled more fresh and delicious!!!
The true test for me was giving Colty the smell test at the end of the day.  He passed with flying colors :)  His clothes STILL smelled like they had just been washed after playing and being a stinky little boy all day.
This stuff smells so fabulous that even Travis noticed our clothes smelling fresher.  That's definitely saying something!

So, please do tell what detergent you use and why you like it!
Also, I'd love to know what liquid fabric softener you use? Still looking for a favorite.

OH and before I forget!  I won the cutest little dress for Emma over at Magpielovely.com yesterday! So excited!
She's having a great giveaway so go and check it out!

Off to bed... Goodnight :)
